Driver education students at Andover High School learn to share the road with big rigs

Thanks to partnerships with the Minnesota Trucking Association and the American Trucking Association, students at Andover High School received an eye-opening experience in the driver’s seat of a semi truck and trailer on May 5.

Students learned about blind spots, and were able to jump in the driver’s seat of a big rig to get a first-hand view of what a semi truck driver can and cannot see while on the road. Students also learned the importance of allowing trucks space on the roadways, as it can take a fully-loaded semi truck and trailer the length of a football field to come to a complete stop at 60 MPH.

Anoka-Hennepin continues to offer driver education classes for high school students during the school year and in the summer. Students fulfill the state requirements for obtaining a learner’s permit and learn responsible and safe driving techniques and practices. Along with classroom work, students also receive eight hours of driving simulation practice before getting behind the wheel of a vehicle.
